“究竟”，“到底”的英文表达

我们这里要讲的“究竟”、“到底”，其目的是用于在问句中加强语气，比如：“他们到底藏在哪里？”。英文的表达方法是在特殊疑问句的疑问词后边插入用于强调的词语如 in the world, on earth, ever, the hell, in the hell 等。其中一些如 what the hell 是比较不礼貌或说话人生气时的说法。具体句式就是“疑问词 + in the world/on earth/ever + 助动词 + 主语 + 其他部分”。这个句式中的疑问词可以是 how, why, where 等。下面来看看一些例子。

What on earth did they mean? 他们到底是什么意思？
How in the world did the ancient Egyptians build those huge pyramids. 古埃及人究竟是如何建造这些巨大的金字塔的。
Where ever did you get those money? 你从哪里弄到这些钱的？
What on earth are they complaining about? 他们到底在抱怨什么？

在写这个句式时要注意不要忘了助动词。比如上面的例句如果说成What on earth they complain about? 就是错误的。当然，如果是作为宾语从句的话则要使用陈述语序而不必使用助动词，如: I really don't know what on earth they are complaining about. 我真的不知道他们究竟在抱怨什么？

由于英文的语言习惯与汉语有很多不同的地方，所以在一些表达上也不一定能找到完全对应的句式。比如：当要表达“究竟有没有”时，在英文中可能就没有对应的直译方法，而是需要用上一些词语如 really, whether or not, at all 等来加强语气，如 They need to know whether or not theses goals are ethical at all. 他们需要知道这些目标到底是否道德。
